Pinoy-British band Firefalldown is busy carving its niche in the London music scene, but for two of its Pinoy members, the Philippines will always be home.
Good Filipino food, the wonderful sense of community, and the warm welcome are some of the things they miss about the Philippines, share vocalist/guitarist Jon Blaylock and bassist Joel Sablayan, who are proud of their Pinoy roots. British drummer Andrew Hodgson completes the trio.
“We love it over there [Philippines]!” says Jon Blaylock, who shares that the group, while London based, continues to reach out to its strong fan base in the Philippines through social-networking sites like Facebook.
Standing out
Firefalldown is making a name for itself through a new breed of rhythm the band members call “punking, funking rock with a lot of heart.” The band’s debut single, “Commissioned,” for release in June by Sonic Juan Records, has received good reviews for its “poignant lyrics” and “refreshing intelligence.”
The trio hopes to awaken people from their apathy and to inspire them to live out their God-given dreams, “to stand up for what they believe in,” says Jon.
The three band members, who met in 2007 while playing for a worship band in London, have different musical influences, but when they come together, it is simply about creating songs that inspire.
“The songs aren’t that easy to classify. Andrew was a double-kick, snare-thrashing death-metal drummer. Joel has been in few R&B/ Funk outfits, and I fronted a punk-rock band, though I do love my funk and my Motown,” says Jon.
Mabuhay ka, Pilipino!
