The Pinoy jeepney, already an icon in Philippine culture and history, is here to stay, never mind its cramped seats or its lack of air-conditioning (although some tourist jeepneys do have air-con, not to mention videoke). Pinoys will be quick to say, “Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke,” but we’re sure treehuggers everywhere will love the jeepney’s brand spanking new version: the Ejeepney.
This electric-powered passenger utility vehicle operates silently and does not emit any smoke. Available in 5kw and soon 7.5kw models, it can take on Baguio’s or Tagaytay’s crazy highways. Aside from the fact that the Ejeepney does not consume power when at traffic-light stop, its 4-speed model can run for two hours with 14 passengers before it needs recharging. The alternatively powered vehicle is perfect for use as a shuttle in real estate developments, golf clubs, or resorts.
Recognized for its roadworthiness, the Ejeepney has been granted normal registration by the Land Transportation Office, like any other brand-new car.
During last week’s test drive, environmental advocate Yvonne Castro of GRIPP says more electric jeepneys are expected to roll out in the coming months.
Retailing at a price comparable to a subcompact import, the Ejeepney is exclusively assembled by MDJuan Enterprises.
