joanna-ampil-pinoy-west-end-starJoanna Ampil, a popular Pinoy musical theater actress, is known for the various strong female characters she’s portrayed in London. In her debut concert in Manila, however, she sang not as a character but as herself and won a standing ovation from the Filipino audience, which is only starting to get to know this big West End star.

Joanna was 17 when she auditioned for Cameron Mackintosh’s Miss Saigon and got the role of Kim when original lead Lea Salonga went on to Broadway to do the same show. Miss Saigon was known for its rigid and tough auditions. “I really couldn’t believe I got the role until opening night,” Joanna shared during her concert, “Joanna Ampil, I Love,” at the Music Museum. greenpeace-no-to-bnppAround 800 volunteers from Greenpeace and the Network Opposed to BNPP (Bataan Nuclear Power Plant) form a giant human banner stating “No to BNPP” at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus in Quezon City, a message of solidarity opposing a House bill to revive the inactive nuclear plant.

Greenpeace, an environmental activist group, is calling on Congress representatives not to support the proposal and withdraw their signatures from the bill, which would effectively lock Filipinos into dependence on the world’s most unsafe and expensive source of electricity.
