Dulaang UP marks the start of its 33rd theater season with Hinabing Pakpak ng Ating mga Anak, a tribute to the late writer Rene Villanueva, who was an advocate of Philippine children’s literature.
The start of UP’s theater season is also especially memorable as it marks the return of the great director Anton Juan after a long stint at the University of Indiana.
In Hinabing Pakpak, two writers flesh out different narratives on Filipino children–stories that present abused, molested, and forgotten children.
Being Juan’s tribute to Villanueva, Hinabing Pakpak is a poignant take-off from the symbolic elements found in the late writer’s texts. Voices of dead and abused children are resurrected in this piece, a searing elegy the recuperates the social conditions of children from document, memory, and Villanueva’s works.
Hinabing Pakpak’s artistic team includes Dexter Santos for choreography, Leo Abaya for production design, John Ilao Batalla for lights design, Jethro Joaquin for sound, Winter David on video and graphics), and Paul Mondoc for photography.
A number of UP theater arts students are also part of the Hinabing Pakpak team, including Carlo Pagunaling for costume design, Carlo Cannu for make-up, Patrick Valera for dramaturgy and assistant direction, and Arkel Mendoza for sound design.
Actors Earl Ignacio, Joel Saracho, Olive Nieto, Ronnie Martinez, Mary Jane Alejo, Rico del Rosario, Via Antonio, Katte Sabate, Chic San Agustin, Mara Marasigan, and JC Santos complete the cast.
Hinabing Pakpak ng Ating mga Anak opens on July 16 and will run until August 10 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater in UP Diliman. Weekday shows are at 7 p.m. while weekend shows are at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

All Things Brown and Beautiful
the play was truly an eye-opening realization. no other play moved me as much as this one did.
I’m not trying to be mean or anything, the play has a good concept and a meesage to convey, but unfortunately the execution didnt give justice.
i would like to thank our professor f0r giving us chance to watch this play…
it is a very helpful tool to let the viewers especially the government to realize what was the REAL FACE of POVERTY in the eyes of youth…
