The Vermont Hibernation Project features works by Pinoy artists Plet Bolipata and Thomas Daquioag during their stay at the Vermont Studio Center in the US as fellows under the Freeman Fellowship for Asian Artists.
Bolipata is known for her whimsical, colorful Manet-inspired works in mixed media. Some of her works were used as illustrations for the Japanese fable “The Hummingbird” as part of a full-color trilogy of environmental stories published by nonprofit artist org Canvas.
Bolipata comes from the well-known Bolipata clan and is sibling to writer Rica Bolipata Santos and violinist Coke Bolipata. She discovered her love for painting at her late twenties.
Daquiaog has won a series of awards in several competitions, including second place for two consecutive years at the Shell National Arts Competition and first place in the National Tourism Week and Biosynergy Painting competitions. He was also the jurors’ choice by the Diwa ng Sining and Art Association of the Philippines in 1993 and grand prize winner in the same competition in 2000.
Daquioag cites the social realists among his earliest influences as well as artists Renato Habulan and Antonio Austria. He has also recently integrated indigenous materials in his works after a trip to Samar.
