Tell the Pinoy mom that her child is being bullied in school, and we bet you in a second she’ll be at the principal’s office complaining. Nothing wrong with mothers stepping in–you know how the Pinoy mom can be quite protective, so it’s assuring to hear that at a Manila-based international school, administrators are proactive about the issue.
A recent US study found out that 77 percent of students are being bullied mentally, verbally, and physically. In the Philippines, Pinoy children are equally exposed to bullying and are even more at risk, as some parents consider it a rite of passage.
At Reedley International School, however, administrators are determined to clamp down on bullying. In a recent anti-bullying talk Reedley hosted at its Libis site, UP professor and child psychologist Leticia Ho explained that the bullies and the bullied both suffer from deep emotional scars. They tend to be withdrawn and depressed, and victimized children are more likely to drop out of school, take up vices, and get into fights.
The talk complements Reedley’s “Drop the Label, Be Kind” program, a campaign that has lessened the instances of bullying in its campus and encouraged students, teachers, and parents to be more caring and supportive of it. We hope other schools would show as much concern.
