  • Is there an issue you feel strongly about? Why not blog about it? Filipino Voicesthe Philippine Issues Writing Project believes that each of us has something to say. Whether it is about the economy, politics, the society, technology, culture, or whatever your cause is, here’s your chance to be heard. (There are prizes to be had too!) You still have time: Contest ends June 9, 2008!
  • Filipino national artist BenCab’s “Related Images” opens tomorrow, May 31, 6 p.m., at Silverlens Gallery in Makati City.
  • Life Is Good’s watermelon festival is a great family bonding activity before school starts! Be there tomorrow, May 31, at 2 p.m., at the Bonifacio High Street.
  • Share your unique UP moments! UP@100 is a bloggers’ initiative aiming to capture 100 memorable UP moments over the state university’s 100 years. For submission details, visit this page.
  • Something to look forward to in July: PETA has an exciting line-up of shows for its 41st season.
  • Want to go global, Pinoy writer? Canvas’ recent writing competition will have the top five children’s story entries reviewed by a US literary agent.
  • Over at Yuchengco Museum, Ann Pamintuan’s jewelry display and “Binondo: Pride of Place,” a photo exhibit, are on an extended run until June 10 and June 30, respectively. Another jewelry design exhibit, Joie de Vivre, also runs until June 10. Admission prices are so affordable! P100 for adults, P50 for students, and P25 for children and senior citizens (less than a movie ticket!), so why not go this weekend?
  • Want a piece of Ann Pamintuan? This world-renowned Pinoy designer’s jewelry pieces–part of the currently running Alchemy exhibit at Yuchengco Museum–are being sold for P1,000 to P40,000. Proceeds from the sale will fund the museum’s traveling exhibits and education program.
  • The Filipino artist is indeed world-class: Joe Datuin’s sculpture placed first and Edmar Colmo’s oil painting was highly recommended at the recent Olympic Sport & Art Contest.
  • The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) looks back at its last 40 years with some nostalgia and looks forward to another exciting decade. PETA’s story of the last 40 years is told in a limited-edition book.
  • This young Pinoy child made it to the Guiness world record as the fastest cup stacker.

Steven practices his cup-stacking skills.

By Ted Regencia

Chicago, IL–Don’t blink, or else you’ll miss it.

That’s how fast Steven Purugganan could stack his cups. He moves in fast-forward mode on real time. So fast he smashed his own Guiness Book world record as the fastest cup stacker, at the 2008 World Sports Stacking Championships in Denver, Colorado last April.

Steven set a record-breaking 6.21 seconds in the “Cycle Stack” category, a solid improvement from his previous world record of 7.23 seconds, which he set only last October 2007 in New York. He beat over a thousand competitors many of whom are older and much more experienced.
