Sol: A Legend About the Sun, a children’s book produced by nonprofit arts and culture group Canvas, is now available in Amazon.
It is Canvas’ first-ever title to be made available internationally, says Gigo Alampay, who heads the nonprofit organization, which aims to promote an appreciation for Filipino art.
“We chose this particular story because we thought it had the most universal appeal,” Alampay says through e-mail.
Sol was a finalist in the Romeo Forbes Children’s Storywriting Competition sponsored by Canvas.
Written by Agay Llanera and illustrated by Farley del Rosario, Sol tells the story of a young boy, Amorsolo, who is enamored by the sun’s splendor. Hoping to win her heart, he rides an enchanted rocking horse to serenade it. However, Amorsolo faces stiff competition as the Moon is also in love with the Sun.
Canvas’ presence in Amazon is just a part of the group’s plan to use the Internet to bring Philippine art and culture internationally through affordable merchandise.
The organization has previously launched Canvas Downstream, an online store catering specifically to Pinoys in North America. Among the merchandise sold are adult and infant T-shirts, messenger and tote bags, mugs, steins, and greeting cards imprinted with designs by artists Manny Garibay, Serj Bumatay, Elmer Borlongan, Plet Bolipata, Romeo Forbes, Farley del Rosario, and Daniel Tayona.
