You’ll laugh over Kicker’s antics. You’ll cry along with Joanna when her friend (and crush) Brett moves to a different state. You’ll empathize with Theo the geek, who always gets picked last in PE. We were all kids once upon a time, and didn’t we all go through the pangs of puppy love, rejection, or the loss of a childhood friend?

The off-Broadway musical Children’s Letters to God, produced locally by Actor’s Actors Inc. and Great.Events@Manila Inc., will certainly bring back childhood memories.

Directed by Bart Guingona, the musical runs on August 31 and September 1 and 2 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium.

It stars Aria Clemente, 2007 World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) Overall Champion of the World; Julia Abueva, Singapore-based thespian and singer; Micah dela Cruz; Tippy dos Santos; Moreen Guese; Vince Ching; the Sison brothers: Marek, Enzo, and Ruiz; Jaime Cabiling; and Nacho Tambunting.

Children’s Letters to God is inspired by an international best-selling book of the same title and follows the lives of five friends as they deal with timeless issues such as death, divorce, loss of a pet or a friend, sibling rivalry, and first love.

It’s like going back in time when the nine-year-old you is the new girl in school having lunch alone. Or the disgruntled and jaded adult who is tired of the daily grind and wishes he was six, when everything was “simple.”

But in the same way that we have complex, grand-scale issues to address every day, children too have their own worries and concerns other than school and play.

They ask, “Dear God. Are you really invisible or is that just a trick?” even as we ponder and rationalize on the existence of a supreme being. They are equally as confused in having to “choose” which parent to be with, while we argue over custodial rights.

We tell you, it never sounded as wise as when we heard it from the mouth of babes.
