  • Uncork a bottle full of childhood memories at Children’s Letters to God, an off-Broadway musical shown at the RCBC Auditorium this weekend.
  • Actor Piolo Pascual, funny girl Pokwang, musician Jun Polistico, and singer Pops Fernandez brought some Pinoy love to our kababayan at the Philippine Fiesta in New Jersey.
  • Worldwide figures on trafficking and abuse may be daunting, but cause-oriented groups such as the International Justice Mission are making a headway.
  • In a recent I-Witness episode, our favorite media man Howie Severino follows several blind pre-schoolers and observes how they go about their daily lives, shuttling from home to school, visiting the Museo Pambata, and becoming tech-savvy.
  • Filipina expat Louie Pilapil ponders the efforts that go into preparing meals and how, whether in China or the Philippines, cooking is a way of loving.
  • A group of bloggers toured the new PETA home last weekend, engaged in a mini workshop, and watched Batang Rizal. You’ll learn more about the eye-opening and educational experience very soon.
  • Last week, we visited Coke Bolipata’s music school, Casa San Miguel, in San Antonio, Zambales (a special thank-you to artist couple Plet Bolipata and Elmer Borlongan for hosting us). There we met Carlo Gabuco, artist and teacher in residence, who renders his social commentaries in mixed media.
  • The Philippine Madrigal Singers make us proud once more for beating four other choir groups at the European Gran Prix in Italy.
  • Surfacing, a group of camera enthusiasts and photojournalists, including veteran lensmen Gil Nartea and Luis Liwanag, unveils a series of activities culminating in the Human Rights Festival in December.

You’ll laugh over Kicker’s antics. You’ll cry along with Joanna when her friend (and crush) Brett moves to a different state. You’ll empathize with Theo the geek, who always gets picked last in PE. We were all kids once upon a time, and didn’t we all go through the pangs of puppy love, rejection, or the loss of a childhood friend?

The off-Broadway musical Children’s Letters to God, produced locally by Actor’s Actors Inc. and Great.Events@Manila Inc., will certainly bring back childhood memories.

Directed by Bart Guingona, the musical runs on August 31 and September 1 and 2 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium.

A photograph is regarded as a powerful tool for communicating ideas in a way that a written or oral account cannot. A photograph is not hindered by language, nor does it expect its viewers to be educated or literate. The language that a photograph speaks can be understood by anybody.

It is with the acknowledgment of this power that we deemed it appropriate to use photographs as a tool for human rights advocacy. We intend to contribute to the continuing effort of sustaining and heightening public awareness and consciousness on the issue of enforced disappearances. By mounting a photo exhibit, we also intend to give a human face to the stories and struggles of the families of the disappeared (desaparecidos). We strongly believe that we can reach out to more people by telling their stories through images.
