Two months after its first doodling session in May, the WeeWillDoodle group did a part two. Walking into FART Gallery on Friday night, we came upon artists and designers bent over some white cartolina, copiously drawing aliens, monsters, and multi-armed creatures suspiciously resembling an octopus or a jellyfish. There were figures in color and black and white, on anything and everything that was allowed: boxes, manila paper, and tarpaulin,
Sequels are a tricky thing. They’re complicated. They usually bring in a bigger, stellar cast. Which is the same thing with WeeWillDoodle. From the original four-person ensemble, there are now ten of them: founding member Nelz Yumul is joined by Ramil Escarda, Mark Ganzon, Paolo Ferrer, Jhoan Medrano, Meneer Marcelo, Kyx Castaneda, Angela Angeles, Jio Beltran, and Francisco Castañeda.
In this second stint, the group allowed audience participation. Doodling seems to be an enjoyable pastime for this group of GMA New Media creative people, it just had to be shared. And lookit: the guest list was a who’s-who of the graphic design/artist community, including Electrolychee (Bru and Marcus Nada), Team Manila, 27+20 (Nico Puertollano and Katwo Librando), Leeroy New, Abi Goy, Brendan Goco, Arvin Javier, DeformIndustry, Giua Salumbides, J. Pacena, Jomike Tejido, Jordan Santos, Mark Salvatus III, Oddballs, Urban Kaleidoscope, Wesley Valenzuela, AJ Omandac, and Oliver Sarmiento.
“We started doodling on bond paper on our spare time,” Ramil shares, “and then napansin naman na pag pinagsama-sama ang drawing namin, maganda ang kinalabasan.”
Doodling for Nelz Yumul (he organized the team and managed to get urban apparel line Marc Ecko as sponsor) is a way to unwind, a cheerier side in contrast to his works in Darkbulb. The group, he says, will be trying out various media in the coming months. A part three is set to happen soon, that’s for sure.
