She tried to sell me a flute (which I declined).

Later on in the afternoon, these kids (flutesellers) got excited over the camera I carried and were clamouring for their pictures to be taken. I took a lot of pictures of these children.

Over to one side, I spied the littlest flute seller who sat apart (on the sidewalk) from the group of kids. She was playing her flute, and she played it very well too. On impulse, I took this shot.

It was only later on in the evening that I finally got to view the large image on my computer. I was surprised to see the tears.

I wanted to kick myself for not buying that flute.

Jerry Yan, Asia's first World Vision Child Sponsorship Ambassador with his sponsored child Yanjinsuren from Mongolia.

Taiwanese superstar Jerry Yan, popularly known as Dao Ming Si of the phenomenal hit TV series Meteor Garden and F4 fame, will visit the Philippines early December to promote World Vision's Child Sponsorship program.

World Vision is a child-focused Christian, development, advocacy and relief organization that helps over 100 million people in 96 countries in 2005 alone. It is one of the world's largest child sponsorship agencies.

Jerry has been appointed as the first Asia Regional Child Sponsorship Ambassador of World Vision.

World Vision-Philippines is among the World Vision offices in Asia that endorses the Asian pop star to be their envoy in promoting child sponsorship across Asia.

Through Jerry's visit, World Vision-Philippines hopes to raise public awareness on child sponsorship and find new sponsors for 1,000 poor Filipino children.

In his inaugural trip as Child Sponsorship Ambassador, Jerry visited World Vision-supported projects and communities in Mongolia last week of October.

Jerry joins more than three million other World Vision child sponsors in supporting poor children the world over.  He currently sponsors three children in Mongolia.

"Becoming a World Vision Child Sponsor has changed me. I had better understanding of the children living in poverty around this part of the world and the dire circumstances many are living in," Jerry said during an interview after his trip in Mongolia.

Jerry has seen for himself how child sponsorship helps keep a child in school, provide the child and his family with basic health care, potable water, food security and sustainable livelihood. Through holistic development, the child will be able to live and grow in a healthier, happier environment.

Following Mongolia, Jerry commenced his Asian tour to eight World Vision offices starting off in Taiwan.  He will then proceed to Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, the Philippines and Thailand from this month until December.

In line with his exposure trips in Mongolia and across Asia, Jerry is calling for around 35,000 new sponsors for children in need.

Here in the Philippines, World Vision assists more than 120,000 children in 34 provinces and 22 cities across the country.  Nearly 10,000 Filipinos are engaged in giving life-changing investment to 11,797 children through child sponsorship. For only P15 a day or P450 a month, a child's life is transformed and his/her future is secured.

"Hello, Ciao, Hallo, Kia Ora, Mabuhay!" (hellos: in order of the countries we just came from) It has been quite a while, and it has been a long and exciting ride.

We arrived on the first of November, and most of the students had to be back at the University by the 2nd day to fix their readmission papers. Only one weekend has passed and now they're back, ready and raring to enroll for another semester.

In a week's time, we're resuming rehearsals, and we'll be back in the local scene -- already with a schedule of shows and appearances all throughout the metro. We're also headed to the provinces to hit it up with the people outside Manila. First stop is Pampanga, and we've got Bicol on the calendar.

Muling Dating, the traditional homecoming concert, will be held at the PhilamLife Theatre on December 3. Details to follow at the website www.freewebs.com/upcc. Shows that are open to the public will also be posted on the site.
